Button mushrooms lose moisture and nutrients quickly once harvested, which is why freshness makes such a difference in both taste and texture. Our UV-exposed, Vitamin D-enriched mushrooms are harvested daily and delivered straight to your kitchen, so you're always starting with the best possible base for your cooking. If you're curious about how that Vitamin D content builds up in the first place, our post on Vitamin D as the sunshine nutrient breaks down the science.
Unpack immediately. Remove mushrooms from any sealed plastic packaging as soon as you get them home — trapped moisture speeds up spoilage.
Skip the wash until you're ready to cook. Store mushrooms unwashed; rinsing early introduces excess moisture that shortens shelf life.
Use a breathable container. A paper bag or a bowl loosely covered with a paper towel works best. Avoid airtight containers or plastic wrap, which trap humidity.
Refrigerate at 2–4°C. Store in the vegetable drawer of your fridge, away from strong-smelling foods like onions, since mushrooms absorb odors easily.
Use within 5–7 days. Fresh, chemical-free mushrooms like ours don't carry preservatives, so they're best enjoyed within a week for peak flavor and texture.
Wipe each mushroom gently with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any surface debris.
If they need a rinse, do it just before cooking — a quick dunk in cold water, then pat dry immediately. Never soak them, as mushrooms act like sponges and will absorb water, diluting flavor when cooked.
Trim the very end of the stem if it looks dry or woody.
Slice mushrooms, saute in butter with minced garlic on high heat until golden, finish with a pinch of salt and cracked pepper. Perfect as a side or a topping for toast.
Saute onions, tomatoes, and ginger-garlic paste, add your favorite masala powders, and stir in sliced mushrooms. Simmer until they soak up the gravy — a great addition to rice or rotis.
Saute mushrooms with onions and garlic, blend with vegetable stock and a splash of cream, and simmer until smooth. A comforting way to get your Vitamin D fix on a cool evening.
Toss whole or halved mushrooms in olive oil, salt, and herbs, then grill or pan-sear until browned. Works beautifully as a side dish or salad topper.
Cooking mushrooms doesn't strip away their Vitamin D content — in fact, light cooking can make some nutrients more bioavailable. That said, avoid prolonged boiling, which can cause some nutrient loss through leaching. Sautéing, grilling, or a quick simmer are your best bets for retaining both flavor and nutrition.
