Most people picture mushroom farms as dark, damp sheds tucked away in cool hill stations. So when we set out to build India's first UV-exposed, Vitamin D-enriched button mushroom farm — right here in the heat of Karnataka — a lot of people asked us: "How is that even possible?"
This post pulls back the curtain on exactly how we do it: the technology, the science, and the sustainable practices that go into every mushroom we grow.
Button mushrooms are naturally fussy. They thrive in cool, humid, tightly controlled conditions — the kind you'd expect in a temperate climate, not in Kolar District. So instead of fighting the outdoor climate, we built our own indoors.
Our farm uses IoT-based climate control systems that continuously monitor and adjust temperature, humidity, and airflow inside the growing chambers. Sensors feed real-time data back to the system, which fine-tunes conditions automatically — no guesswork, no manual overcorrection. This means we can grow premium-quality button mushrooms year-round, regardless of what's happening outside, using a scalable, hi-tech indoor and vertical farming setup.
The result: consistent quality, predictable harvests, and a farming model that isn't hostage to the seasons.
Great mushrooms start long before they sprout — they start with the substrate. We use wheat straw as our base material, transformed through a carefully controlled composting process into a nutrient-dense growing medium.
This isn't just "let it rot and hope for the best." Our composting process is closely monitored for moisture, temperature, and nutrient balance — what we call "Water Wisdom" — ensuring the straw breaks down into exactly the environment button mushrooms need to thrive.
Here's where our process really stands apart. Traditional mushroom compost preparation relies on repeated turning and open-air piling, and typically takes 25-30 days at minimum — sometimes stretching to 45 days. It also usually requires large batches, at least 3-5 tons of raw material, and a correspondingly large plot of land.
Our method skips the turning process entirely, using a shifting technique instead of repeated piling. This lets us produce ready compost in just 12-13 days, 15 days at the outside — roughly half the industry norm. We also work at a much smaller scale: under 1 ton of compost per batch, on just 150 square feet of land. That's a faster, leaner, more space-efficient process, with no drop in compost quality.
What makes this process genuinely sustainable is what happens after the harvest. Instead of discarding spent compost as waste, we loop it back into the system — reusing it as organic manure. It's a closed-loop, circular economy model: nothing goes to landfill, and the nutrients that helped grow one crop go on to enrich the soil for the next.
Here's the part that truly sets our mushrooms apart: Vitamin D enrichment through controlled UV exposure.
Vitamin D deficiency is widespread across India, and mushrooms are one of the few plant-based (technically fungal) sources capable of naturally producing Vitamin D2 when exposed to UV light — similar to how human skin produces Vitamin D from sunlight. By exposing our button mushrooms to a controlled dose of UV light during cultivation, we significantly boost their natural Vitamin D content — without any chemical additives, injections, or artificial fortification.
This means the mushrooms you cook with aren't just fresh and chemical-free — they're actively working to help close a nutritional gap that affects a large share of the population.
Note: Once our first batch is harvested, we'll be sending samples for lab testing to publish an authentic, verified report on the exact Vitamin D content — so stay tuned for real numbers, not just claims.
Once the compost is ready and the growing chambers are seeded, the countdown begins. It takes 32-35 days from start to the first harvest — that's the time our climate-controlled chambers spend nurturing the mushrooms through every growth stage.
Once harvesting begins, it doesn't stop at a single pick. We harvest fresh mushrooms every single day for a 2-3 week window. Production naturally follows a curve — starting modestly, ramping up to a peak, then gradually tapering off toward the end of the cycle. This means fresher mushrooms reach you more consistently, rather than one large one-time harvest sitting in storage.
